A stay at Goldsmith's Bed and Breakfast Inn just wouldn't be complete without taking the time to enjoy the Garden City. In 1805, Meriweather Lewis and William Clark camped in the Missoula Valley on their historic journey through the wilderness. Originally home to the Salish, Pend d'Oreille, and Kootenai tribes, western Montana was finally settled in 1860 when C.P. Higgins and F.L. Worden opened a trading post they referred to as the Hellgate Village. The Salish term for the area, "Nemissoolatakoo," spawned the city's name, Missoula. From Goldsmith's Inn, guests can take a short stroll to the footbridge across the Clark Fork river, and from there enjoy the miles of walking and biking paths that follow the river. Hike into the Hellgate Canyon, climb Mount Sentinel or just take a walk along the river bank. A walk of only minutes will also bring guests to Missoula's own hand-carved carousel, a volunteer project that united the entire community under a common vision. A Carousel for Missoula is something quite special that no visitor should miss. Big Sky Bikes, MIssoula's oldest bicycle shop, is located right next door and bike rentals are available. During the summer months, guests can take in a ballgame with the Missoula Osprey, our own minor league professional baseball team. A farm team for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Osprey are one of Missoula's most popular summertime attractions. Sports fans can also enjoy an afternoon of college football with the Montana Grizzlies or a good old game of rugby with the Missoula Maggots Club. A visit to the beautiful University of Montana campus is a virtual journey to the early days of the twentieth century. Many of the buildings on campus are historical landmarks and the natural aura of the grounds bring a sense of peace and tranquility. Guests yearning for a taste of the local culture will find that and more with the Missoula Symphony and the Missoula Children's Theater. If you enjoy the great outdoors, Goldsmith's Bed and Breakfast Inn provides the ideal location from which to begin your adventure. Lewis and Clark Trail Adventures provides guided whitewater kayak, raft, and canoe trips throughout the region, and is located just blocks away. Fishermen find a haven in Missoula, the location for the filming of Robert Redford's A River Runs Through It. And if you're a winter sports enthusiast, Missoula offers unparalleled access to some of the region's finest winter recreation areas.
